Painting and Decorating course elements
A course consists of two elements. The first element is a 6 hour taster session. In this session clients are inducted onto the full 30 hour course (see below). Initial assessments are undertaken to understand the client’s ability level in numeracy and literacy and to understand any limitations clients may have when undertaking the health and safety part of the course. As the health and safety unit is mainly theory, it is important that we know that clients will be able to understand written work. If there is a problem, then additional learning support can be provided to help clients on an individual basis. After initial assessments have been completed, the clients will have a site induction followed by a guided tour of the project, enabling them to meet existing clients who joined the project at an earlier date. At this point, clients will then undertake the first set of questions required to understand construction health and safety. This work is essential to them succeeding in gaining their
CSCS card. Further CSCS health and safety sessions will continue throughout the full 30 hour course. When clients have completed the initial CSCS questions, they will then join in on the practical work that is an ongoing part of the project.
The second element is the 30 hour course. The content of the 30 hour course will be:
Preparation – all areas to be decorated will need to be fully prepared. Clients will undertake sanding surfaces, filling cracks and other imperfections, removing old/flaking paint and sugar soap cleaning of all prepared surfaces.
Cutting in – Clients will learn cutting in techniques to enable them to create the required finish and to blend contrasting colours on adjacent surfaces.
Roller techniques – Clients will use hand rollers to apply emulsion paint to walls and ceilings. Clients will also learn how to use an extending handle (Wand) to reach areas not accessible by hand.
Paintbrush techniques – Clients will use various size brushes and paints to undertake painting of specific surfaces including panel doors, windows, walls, etc.
Setting out – Clients will be taught how to set out an area that conforms with health and safety regulations as well as protecting the surrounding areas from spills, spraying etc.
Tool maintenance – Clients will be expected to clean all tools to the highest possible standards.
Clients will be expected to reach the industry standard in each discipline.
CSCS questions/answers – a series of approx 250 questions will be discussed and revised to ensure that clients are aware of what type of question may arise within the CSCS test. Clients will complete each set of questions, through discussion with their tutor and group members. They will then have further opportunities to revise sections if necessary throughout the course.
- Health and Safety including:
Clients are usually split into two groups to enable the practical elements to progress throughout the project. Clients who undertake the theoretical work in the morning session will then undertake practical work in the afternoon session and vice versa.
Clients will have access to careers IAG (Information Advice and Guidance) support and will be helped to progress into work/self employment or onto other learning opportunities if appropriate.
On successful completion of the course, clients may be invited to join the ongoing project as a volunteer. This will enable them to practice and fine tune their newly acquired skills, to participate in a voluntary venture, perhaps for the first time and to gain valuable work experience in a live painting and decorating project. They will also be given the option to progress onto a city & guilds certified multi skills in construction course provided by
Construction Training Specialist (CTS). On this course they can learn further construction skills such as bricklaying, joinery, plumbing, tiling, floor screeding etc. as well as undertaking some further painting and decorating units.
Clients will learn valuable practical, health and safety, soft and life skills by participating on this course. All projects are undertaken in properties for vulnerable people and full interaction is required to help the project succeed.
